Job Title: Computer Operator
Location: Nashville, TN

Job Summary:
We are seeking a Computer Operator to oversee day-to-day computer operations functions, including supervising personnel and ensuring timely, accurate data processing. This role requires hands-on technical involvement with mainframe or distributed computer systems and may include fixed or rotating shifts. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and capable of leading a team in a high-availability IT operations environment.

Distinguishing Features:
The position involves supervisory responsibilities in one or more of the following capacities:

• Managing a small unit or shift of remote job entry operators

• Supporting a Computer Operations Manager at a small or complex site

• Overseeing data entry and operations control staff

• Operating independently with supervisory authority on specific shifts

Key Responsibilities:

1. Supervise, train, and evaluate subordinate data processing or computer operations staff

2. Assist with or assign staff work schedules based on operational needs and user requirements

3. Supervise or participate in key system operations such as OS backups, tape creation, and system maintenance

4. Monitor input/output quality control, investigate processing errors, and coordinate vendor support for hardware issues

5. Operate and oversee the use of peripheral equipment including tape drives, printers, sorters, and shredders

6. Install hardware/software, and train staff and users on new systems or procedures

7. Collaborate with systems analysts, programmers, and IT management to resolve operational issues

8. Interpret and enforce IT policies and procedures at the site level

9. Maintain operational logs, documentation, production reports, and issue tracking

Minimum Education and Experience:

• Education : Graduation from a standard high school

• Substitution : Full-time employment may substitute for required education on a year-for-year basis (up to 4 years) in one of the following areas:

  • Office clerical or storekeeping experience

  • Computer operations

  • Troubleshooting related software or hardware issues on minicomputers or microcomputers

Necessary Special Qualifications:

• A valid vehicle operator's license may be required for certain assignments

Preferred Skills:

• Strong understanding of mainframe or distributed system operations

• Familiarity with backup processes, data input/output validation, and equipment troubleshooting

• Prior supervisory or team leadership experience in IT operations

• Effective communication and documentation skills

• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
